Coming on the heels of a highly successful $100k tournament the Aussie Millions has announced that on January 27th, 2011 they will host a single table tournament featuring a massive $250,000 buy-in. The event will be played as a winner take-all tournament, with the winner walking off with some $2 million!
Although nobody has officially registered for the tournament, numerous high-rollers are at the Crown Casino including the likes of Phil Ivey, Gus Hansen, Howard Lederer, David Oppenheim, Patrik Antonius, Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan, and the $100k Challenge winner Sam Trickett –fresh off his recent $1.5 million win. The announcement might even attract PokerStars pros like Daniel Negreanu to participate in the event –Team PokerStars boycotted the $100k Challenge tournament at the Aussie Millions in retaliation for Team Full Tilt Poker not appearing at the $100k Super-High-Roller event at the PCA.
The tournament has been the subject of rumors for some time now, but according to a Tweet by PokerNews’ reporter Eric Ramsey, Tournament Director Christian Just made it official yesterday: Ramsey Tweeted: “T.D. Christian just officially announced the $250,000 event for the Aussie Millions on January 27th. One table, winner take all $2 million!,”
The $250,000 buy-in will go down as the largest entry-fee in poker history, but as major tournaments around the globe continue to play a game of oneupsmanship you can expect more tournaments to float similar ideas to try to attract the biggest names in poker to their events, and capture a few headlines in the process.
