Though it won’t compare to the high profile revelry that was the 2011 Aussie Millions, the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour began its third season on Tuesday in Adelaide. 105 players registered for the first starting day of the ANZPT Adelaide tournament, with plenty more expected for Day 1B. 30 of the Day 1A players earned their spots on PokerStars, who is sponsoring the event.
The first day of the tournament was host to 8 levels of play, and concluded with Jesse McKenzie, a PokerStars qualifier, in the lead. Poker pro Joe Serock closely trailed McKenzie. Hitting the rail on Day 1A were Bryan Huang (a Team PokerStars Pro and Asia Player of the Year in 2010) and Stewart Scott (winner of the 2009 Aussie Millions).
Among the Day 1B registrants are Tony Hachem (PokerStars Pro and ANZPT Player of the Year for two years running) and Brendon “brendon1717″ Rubie, who is the top ranked online poker player in Australia. The event will conclude on February 6.
Canada’s Jonathan Duhamel, the winner of last year’s WSOP Main Event, added to his live tournament resume a few days ago when he won the European Poker Tour Deauville High Roller tournament, sponsored by PokerStars. His grand prize of 200,000 Euros will sit nicely alongside the $8.9 million purse he won at the WSOP in 2010.
58 players entered the EPT Deauville High Roller, with the 10,000 Euro buy-ins creating a prize pool of over 556,000 Euros. Duhamel’s next major tournament appearance will be at the November Nine Reunion, taking place at the Foxwoods Casino on February 8th in Connecticut. The event, officially entitled the Mega Stack Challenge XIX, will include all 9 of the final table players from last year’s WSOP Main Event, along with qualifying live tournament players from the Foxwoods Casino.
