Cates Over Dwan Again in durrrr Challenge 2

Although the durrrr Challenge 2 series, which pits Tom “durrrr” Dwan against rival Dan “jungleman12″ Cates in an ongoing heads up format, hasn’t been occurring on a regular basis, Cates’ domination has been consistent. The trend continued a few evenings ago when Cates destroyed Dwan for $270k, significantly extending his lead over the course of less than 800 hands.

Cates, who has yet to accept a sponsorship deal from any major online poker site, is now ahead of Dwan, a sponsored Full Tilt Poker pro, by upwards of $1.2 million in the Challenge.

The pair multitabled four tables of NLHE at the $200 / $400 stake level, and Cates displayed his dominance early on in the match. By the time half of the hands had been played, Cates had already taken off to a $200k lead and the deal was effectively sealed.

Luck certainly appeared to be on Cates’ side, and the Maryland resident admitted this multiple times throughout the match.

The pivotal moment of the match came in the form of a $127k pot that ultimately went to Cates. Dwan held two-pair while Cates held a straight draw and top-pair. Following the 7-6-5 flop, the pair decided to run it twice. After counterfeiting Dwan’s hand, Cates hit his straight and won the enormous pot.

According to the chatbox, Dwan was playing from an airplane, as he ultimately ended the session due to “turbulence” and “sketchy Internet.”

This marks the third durrrr Challenge 2 session that Cates has won consecutively. The rules stipulate that Dwan must pay Jungleman12 $1.5 million if the series ends with Dwan down by $1 million or more. In total, the Challenge 2 will contain 50,000 hands, with nearly 32,000 hands remaining. If the challenge ended now, Cates would record +$2.7 million as he’s currently ahead of Dwan by $1.2 million.
