Dan “Jungleman12″ Cates Admits to Multi-Accounting

The ongoing saga of Jose Macedo’s cheating scandal continues to unfold, and more information regarding Haseeb “Dogishead” Qureshi and Dan “Jungleman12″ Cates’ involvement in the scandal seems to come to light every day. The latest development in the scandal comes from an interview with Cates conducted by SubjectPoker.com (including interviewers Noah Stephens-Davidowitz and high stakes pro Vanessa Selbst).
During the interview (which sounds more like a police interrogation than a conversation among mutually respectful poker pros), Cates explained that he personally saw Qureshi using Macedo’s online poker account. He went on to explain that he didn’t think it was a big deal, because he wouldn’t have classified it as “deception.” It’s hard to follow Cates’ thinking, given that reads in online poker completely depend on knowing that the person hiding behind a handle is the person you expect.
Following the initial interview, Jungleman12′s publicist contacted SubjectPoker to inform them that Cates had lied. In reality, it was Cates, not Qureshi, that played using Jose Macedo’s “Girah” account.
Cates stumbles over his words throughout the interview, and never seems to truly apologize for the multi-accounting incident because it was “only one time” and he “lost money” anyway. Late in the interview, Vanessa Selbst asks:
“So what about the fact that you’ve now admitted to playing on an account that wasn’t yours, one of the motivations of which that the account was down money and looked to be a soft player and taking advantage of that? Do you think that was wrong?”
Cates’ response finally indicated at least some measure of regret:
“Yeah, yeah, that’s one of the things I’m referring to in a way that I crossed the line. I mean, it’s not a hugely bad thing, but I agree that it’s basically wrong. I don’t want to defend myself more than that. Sure, I made mistakes.”
