Erik Seidel Wins Aussie Millions Super High Roller

Erik Seidel, undoubtedly one of the most respected names in high stakes poker, has just placed first at the Super High Roller event at the Aussie Millions tournament in Melbourne, Australia. The event featured a world record breaking buy-in of $250k, and despite being added to the Aussie Millions schedule at the last minute, amassed a roster of 20 players.
Although the competition was incredibly stiff (Tom “durrrr” Dwan, Phil Ivey, Annette Obrestad, John Juanda and Dan “jungleman12″ Cates all bought in), none were more successful than Seidel. Seidel’s massive $2.5 million cash prize elevates him to a number 3 spot on the leaderboard of winningest poker players in history. Only the legendary Daniel Negreanu and Phil Ivey remain ahead of Seidel. Quite an impressive resume addition for a player who already holds eight WSOP bracelets and a permanent spot in the Poker Hall of Hame.
Seidel said that he “really excited” simply to earn his buy-in money back, let alone receive a 1,000% return on his investment. Seidel went on to describe his 2011 as “incredible” thus far. Only a week ago, he secured a third place finish at the Aussie Millions $100k high roller, an event ultimately won by Sam Trickett.
Trickett was heavily favored to win the $250k Super High Roller as well, but Seidel had other plans. Trickett’s massive stack heading into the final table of the SHR allowed him to easily coast into heads up play with Seidel, at which point Trickett held a stack of chips five times that of Seidel’s.
At this point, Seidel knew that he at least $1.5 million guaranteed, an understanding that presumably gave him the peace of mind necessary to push hard for the win. Humbly, Seidel pointed to luck in the last several hands as the primary reason for his win. He even went to on to describe Trickett as the “best player at the table.”
David Benyamine earned a massive $1 million prize for placing third, which concluded the payout schedule for the Super High Roller.
