The World Poker Tour hit up Vienna over the past week to host another part of its “world” portion of the tour, and the tournament was a success. Over the course of two starting days at the Montesino Casino, a total of 555 players competed in the €3,200 + €300 buy-in Main Event, setting a record for the WPT on European soil. That meant the prize pool would be enough to pay out the top 54 players with nearly €480K for the winner alone.
Thanks to the PartyPoker blog, we know how it all went down. By the start of Day 2, only 260 players were still in the race, but the money bubble burst later in the evening, courtesy of Gianluca Speranza who left in 55th place when his eights couldn’t beat kings. Only 35 players made it through the day, and that led them to Day 3 for the playdown to the final table. Names like Ruben Visser and Per Linde were some of the casualties, and the last elimination of the night was Pascal Lefrancois, whose A-9 fell to K-10, and he departed with €25,840 for ninth place.
Dmitry Gromov went into the final table on March 29 with 5,325,000 chips and a solid lead over the bunch, while WPT Venice champion Alessio Isaia was near the bottom of the pack with Valentin Stroiescu eighth in the counts.
With Mike Sexton and Jesse May in the booth for commentating and a live stream on tap for viewers around the world, action got underway. Gromov came out strong and eliminated Markus Jenisch in eighth place, Isaia in seventh, and Maximilian Noll in sixth. Maksim Kolosov stepped in to take out Stroiescu in fifth place, but Gromov was back to send Mario Adinolfi home in fourth and Simon Ravnsbaek in third. Heads-up went quickly as Kolosov made his move with pocket eights and Gromov called with As-10h. A 10 hit on the flop and secured the win for Dmitry Gromov.
1st place: Dmitry Gromov (€447,840)
2nd place: Maksim Kolosov (€241,180)
3rd place: Simon Ravnsbaek (€169,690)
4th place: Mario Adinolfi (€115,420)
5th place: Valentin Stroiescu (€83,550)
6th place: Maximilian Noll (€65,460)
7th place: Alessio Isaia (€49,100)
