Gus Hansen has been one of the most successful players of 2011, but he received a serious negative mark on his record only a few nights ago when he was trounced by O Fortuna PLS for nearly $560k.
The Great Dane faced off against O Fortuna PLS over the course of 1,100 hands of 2-7 Triple Draw played at the $1,500 / $3,000 stake level. Hansen may be thinking twice before he strays from his standard games of NLHE and PLO in the future.
Although O Fortuna PLS rarely makes high stakes poker headlines, he’s been extremely successful in 2011, quietly earning $1.3 million since the beginning of January. He first broke onto the scene in 2010 when he crushed Tom “durrrr” Dwan on multiple occasions. O Fortuna PLS is widely regarded as a Limit specialist with the potential to become a household high stakes name in the near future.
Unfortunately for Hansen, his losses didn’t stop there. The Dane engaged in a few other sessions with little success, bumping his losses up to $716k. Minor redemption came early in the morning, however, when a brief session against Cole South earned him $230k on Full Tilt.
Hansen’s total losses came to $486k in only two days. Despite this, he remains the winningest high stakes online player of 2011, and his total earnings still exceed $3 million, if only by a small margin.
Elsewhere in the world of high stakes poker, David Oppenheim displayed his cash game prowess to earn $252k, while Phil “OMGClayAiken” nearly matched his earnings with a $246k win. Other successful names included skjervoy (up $138k), EazyPeazy (up $162k) and Lance84 (up $207k).
The worst player of the night wasn’t Gus Hansen, but his final opponent Cole South. South lost over $581k, bringing his total earnings for 2011 to -$700k. Other losers included fishosaurusREX (down $110k), Seb86 (down $129k) and Phil Ivey (down $133k).
