The latest edition of the PokerStars SuperStar Showdown, all of which have featured Viktor “Isildur1″ Blom, is now in the books. This was the third 2,500 hand installment of the series, and it marked another victory for Blom. Blom defeated none other than Dan “Jungleman12″ Cates to earn $51,000. So far, Blom’s only loss in the series was at the hands of the meticulous and strategic Isaac Haxton.

Cates and Blom multi-tabled their way through the session, allowing them to complete 2,500 hands of heads up NLHE at the $50 / $100 stake level in under four hours. The match included enormous swings, with the two trading the lead multiple times during the first 1/3rd of the competition. By the halfway mark, Cates was building a steady lead of over $60,000.

Shortly after, a bad beat gave Isildur1 a $15,000 pot and broke Cates’ momentum. Cates completed a nut flush on the river, but it was not match for I1′s king-high flush.

From here, Blom continued to build momentum and was finally down by only $15,000. On the following hand, Blom won a $25,000 pot with a Q-J broadway straight on the river, beating Jungleman12′s three Kings.

The final hour play was all about Blom, who eventually extended his lead to over $100,000 until a bad beat on the river gave Cates $54k in one of the final hands. When play concluded, Isildur1 had a $51,196 lead. Railbirds were disappointed by a marked lack of Blom’s trademark trash talking. Both players typed a quick “gg” (short for “good game”) before logging off or the night.

Cates joins Tony G is the short list of players to fall at the hands of Isildur1 in the SuperStar Showdown series. Although Blom’s next opponent in the series has yet to be announced, forum crawlers are shouting for a Haxton rematch, while Daniel Negreanu seemed to express interest in the challenge via the chatbox.
