Lex Veldhuis and ElkY schedule kickboxing match
This is what happens when prop bets go bad! Two Team PokerStars Pros, Lex Veldhuis and Bertrand “ElkY” Grosspellier have set up a kickboxing match according to Veldhuis on Twitter: “I’m fighting (kickboxing) Elky in Las Vegas this summer. Last week of May right before WSOP probably. This all because of a side bet!”
Two other players who were scheduling something along the same lines were Andrew Robl and Sorel Mizzi who were set to take part in a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu match, but Mizzi called it off due to the recent drama surrounding the Bluff Magazine Player of the Year in 2010 –Robl still has the offer on the table if anyone is interested!
This will not mark the first time two poker players have gone at it in a combat sport either: in 2009 Gus Hansen and his longtime friend Theo Jorgensen took part in a boxing match that saw Jorgensen edge Hansen on points after three rounds.
ElkY is at a severe cultural disadvantage as the Dutch –Veldhuis is from the Netherlands– are known for producing many of the world’s top kickboxers, while France –where Grosspellier is from—is more known for cooking! To be honest, France has a long history of Savate –which is basically the French name for Kickboxing with a few minor differences in rules, mostly regarding the type of strikes permitted—although the country does not have the Martial Arts tradition of the Netherlands.
