Mainstream Media’s Poker Pieces: Elizabeth Taylor as Poker Alice

written by: Jennifer under Poker Comments: Comments Off

Poker made its way into mainstream media in several places over the past week, the most unexpected of which came in a memorial written about Elizabeth Taylor’s appearance in a movie about the famed “Poker Alice.” The other stories were about actual poker players who made bigger news, both with regard to their quest for money. While Jungleman12 looks to earn it through his online poker lifestyle, Varkonyi wants his money back via a hedge fund lawsuit. We’ll let these poker stories speak for themselves.

Elizabeth Taylor Memories

After the March 23rd death of Elizabeth Taylor, remembrances were published by the thousands. One such article was written courtesy of a Tucson-based website, in which a gentleman spoke of Taylor’s role in a 1987 made-for-TV movie called “Poker Alice” about the famed poker player. Not many remember Taylor’s performance in that movie that gave life to a pioneering woman.

If poker is going to be covered in the mainstream media, it might as well be done by a writer at the New York Times who seems to know poker in addition to being able to write a solid personal profile. The story takes a look at Daniel Cates in a way that no poker publication could or would, with a perspective that makes him somewhat relatable to those outside the poker community. Robert Varkonyi

This Forbes piece reports that Robert and wife Olga filed a lawsuit against a hedge fund alleging fraud. The writer discusses an investment of $1.4 million that was made in 2008 and connected it to his win of $2 million in the 2002 World Series of Poker. While he may know something of which the public is not aware, it is unlikely that he still had $1.4 of the $2 million from his WSOP win six years after it happened. Claiming that Texas hold’em and high finance don’t always mix well may be a bit of a stretch to make that connection.
