Mainstream Media’s Poker Pieces: Space Poker Joker and Slim in St. Louis
written by: Jennifer under Poker Comments: Comments Off
The highlights – or lowlights – of this week’s foray into mainstream media found poker notes in different perspectives. The Lunar Poker Tour was an April Fool’s joke, but we also stumbled upon some of the worst poker writing as well as a St. Louis newspaper that just couldn’t leave Amarillo Slim alone. Granted, the poker media has a difficult enough time, but when that collides with bigger media, things can get interesting.
Today’s poker tours are getting so big and pricy that a joke about just that made it to the MSNBC “Cosmic Log” on April Fool’s Day. The link to a poker website mentioned a $10 million poker tournament in space with the Lunar Poker Tour on tap for the future. Hey, PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker! Whoever gets this one has the ultimate promotion. Who wants to win the online poker race?
This seems to be a reader-submitted “diary” of some sort, but it may be some of the worst “poker” writing ever published. Not only are there grammatical errors galore, but the tips themselves are almost undecipherable. We only link to this because it’s so terrible … and it’s located on a reproductive health website. (Insert your own joke here.)
With the World Series of Poker Circuit event moving into St. Louis’ Harrah’s casino, it was only proper that the primary newspaper – St. Louis Post Dispatch – picked up on the story. But the focus of the piece was guest players Amarillo Slim, and the writer had to mention his 2003 indictment while mentioning his place in poker and his accomplishments. Way to attract people to the events, St. Louis!
