According to poker.org the person who won the EBay auction for Peter Eastgate’s 2008 World Series of Poker Championship bracelet has finally come forward, and the man who was willing to part with the $147,000 necessary to own a piece of poker history was Scottish philanthropist and poker enthusiast William Haughey.
Word came down from the Danish newspaper ekstrabladet.dk who reported Haughey was on hand when the money was handed over to UNICEF –Eastgate donated the entire proceeds from the sale to the popular charity—which according to the Danish Daily went down like this: “Haughey was also present when the money was handed over to UNICEF, at the occasion represented by Manchester United’s legendary manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, who is a UNICEF ambassador and a friend of Haughey.”
Eastgate –who seems to be turning into somewhat of a recluse—was not present at the UNICEF presentation, but his lawyer, Claus Nielsen, was on hand to speak for the young poker champion, and told ekstrabladet.dk, “Willie said that when he saw that Peter would donate all the money to charity, he decided that he would win the auction by all means. He was touched by Peter’s generosity.”
Eastgate left poker in mid-2010, and by the end of the year he had been dropped as a sponsored poker pro by PokerStars, and soon thereafter put the finishing touch on his early retirement by auctioning off his Championship Bracelet; Eastgate stated he never wears it, and it has no sentimental value to him.
