Multi Tabling – Playing Straightforward

written by: John under Poker Strategy Comments: Comments Off

If you decide to move down in limits in order to mass multi table, be prepared for a shift in playing styles. Multi tabling does not allow players to make unique decisions with each hand that they play. For the most part, one hand should be played the same as the next. If you are folding QK UTG in a 6-Max game one time, but then raise it the next, you are going to confuse yourself.

Multi tabling play, especially mass multi tabling, calls for a systematic approach to the game. Generally, this is not going to be the most profitable strategy when playing poker, but when multi tabling, it is. If you are playing a few tables, your strategy should be very different than if you were playing 12 or more tables. 12 tables is rapid fire poker that leaves little time for decision making. A few tables, however, leaves ample time for critical decisions. If your goal is to earn a set rate, mass multi tabling can work just fine. If you want to move up in limits, without an end in sight, multi tabling is not the best option.

ABC Poker

ABC poker is the best way to make money when mass multi tabling, this is, however, over simplifying it. You should still be able to think critically when playing a ton of tables, even if you don’t have time to really analyze each and every decision that you make.

No-Limit Hold’em, $0.50 BB (6 handed) @ Party Poker

Button ($23.35)

Hero (SB) ($50)

BB ($50)

UTG ($78.19)

MP ($65.11)

CO ($155.05)

Preflop: Hero is SB with Jh, Jc

UTG bets $1.75, MP calls $1.75, 1 fold, Button calls $1.75, Hero calls $1.50, 1 fold

Pre flop we are dealt pocket jacks. The UTG player open raises and gets a handful of calls. Being out of position and considering the open raiser’s position, we elect to flat call and see a flop. On the flop we are still going to be out of position.

Flop: ($7.50) 2s, As, Jd (4 players)

Hero checks, UTG bets $3.75, MP calls $3.75, Button calls $3.75, Hero raises to $14, 2 folds, Button raises to $21.60 (All-In), Hero calls $7.60

The flop is great for our hand as we flop a set. Being that the other players probably have an ace, and the UTG player was aggressive pre flop, we check with the intention of raising. As we had hoped, the UTG player leads out for half pot and again gets multiple calls. At this point it is back on us. Since the board is very draw heavy, we need to make a raise and thin out the field. Hopefully we can go all in before the turn is even dealt. The first two players fold to our raise, but the button decides to shove. We make the easy call and hold up against a draw. Sometimes leading out there would have been OK, but when mass multi tabling, a simple check raise is just as, if not more, effective.

Turn: ($58.20) 5d (2 players, 1 all-in)

River: ($58.20) Ah (2 players, 1 all-in)

Total pot: $58.20 | Rake: $3.40

Results:

Button had Ks, 10s (one pair, Aces).

Hero had Jh, Jc (full house, Jacks over Aces).

Outcome: Hero won $109.60
