Octavian Voegele of Austria made his live poker presence known last year on the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour, where he impressively appeared at three of the final tables during the series and finished third at the 2010 ANZPT Adelaide Main Event. Since then, the player known as “vegele” in online circles has been all but quiet on the live tournament scene, with finishes such as 190th at last month’s Caribbean Adventure and 92nd place at a $1,000 NLHE event at the 2010 WSOP. Voegele made good the promise he showed last year by winning ANZPT Adelaide over the weekend.
Voegele was an early favorite in this year’s ANZPT Adelaide, and entered the final table as the dominant chip leader. He maintained his lead for nearly all of final table play to win first place and a tidy sum of AUD $148,900.
Voegele’s only hiccup during the event was a brief demotion to second place with four competitors remaining. Once heads up play began against Jesse McKenzie, Voegele regained his composure and battled his way to a seemingly effortless victory.
253 players registered for the ANZPT Adelaide Main Event, either paying the AUD $2,400 buy-in or winning seats through satellite qualifiers. The prize pool of AUD $551,540 marked a new record for live poker tournaments in South Australia. The top 27 competitors received money prizes.
The Australia New Zealand Poker Tour, sponsored by PokerStars, is scheduled to resume on March 23rd through the 27th in Perth, Australia. There’s little doubt that Octavian Voegele will be carrying his momentum to this event as well.
