Roberto Romanello Adds WPT Title to List of Wins with Bratislava Victory

Directly from the World Poker Tour stop in Vienna, players and tournament staff hopped airplanes and trains to get over to Slovakia for the WPT Bratislava. There may have been some cursing at the person who created the schedule, as the Vienna final table wrapped on March 29 and Bratislava festivities started on March 30. Regardless, it started on time, and two starting days brought several hundred players to the tables at the Golden Vegas Casino for the €2500 + €220 Main Event.

Only 137 players made it through their respective first days, and that number dwindled down to 31 players during a very long Day 2. Though the final number of players in the tournament was not revealed, it was ultimately determined that the total prize pool came to €488,935, which was enough to pay 27 finalists and reserve €140,685 for first place. Day 3 took players down to the final table, and the end of the action saw Florian Langmann out near the final table bubble and Day 3’s starting chip leader Marek Blasko out in tenth place.

The final table began on April 3 with Roberto Romanello holding 1,803,000 chips and leading the octet, while Marek Tatar was the short stack with 105K chips. Detailed updates were provided by the PartyPoker blog.

Action kicked off with Alexander Jager eliminating Lubomir Kudlicka, and short-stacked Tatar was ousted by Mayu Roca, the latter of whom also took out Bodo Sbrzesny in seventh place. Chris Williamson was the next to go, courtesy of Romanello, Jesper Hoog was busted by Roca, and Frank Dollinger took a fourth place finish due to Jager. But it was Jager who was the next to go, thanks to a the pocket fours of Romanello standing up to A-K.

The heads-up match lasted quite awhile, but eventually one hand found the duo in a preflop raising war with Romanello the one to move all-in with pocket fives, and Roca calling for his tournament life with A-K. Romanello was happy to see the race situation, and his pair did hold up to the J-6-8-3-Q board. That left Mayu Roca with second place, and Full Tilt Pro and recent EPT champion Roberto Romanello happily accepted his victory with tears and friends like James Akenhead and Andrew Feldman at his side.

1st place: Roberto Romanello (€140,685)
2nd place: Mayu Roca (€71,000)
