The British Take Vilamoura

After surviving a star studded final table at the European Poker Tour Vilamoura main event on Thursday, British poker player Toby Lewis came out on top to win the coveted tournament title – not to mention a nearly half million Euro prize. The 20 year old poker newbie described his feelings after the event as being “pretty happy at the moment.” The final table at Vilamoura consisted of a few notable poker vets included the EPT superstar Rob Hollink, the legendary soccer player Teddy Sheringham and the runner up to this year’s Aussie Millions event – Frederick Jensen.
Lewis is just beginning his poker career. In fact, his largest win before Vilamoura in a live event was when he played in Venice at the IPT PokerStars event. Lewis has every right to be happy at that event as the final table was indeed a struggle with Swedish poker star Martin Jacobson fighting him the whole way. After building his stack with a hefty win over Jacobson on the day before the final day, Lewis went on to face him head to head for the tournament title.
More than 380 players took part in this year’s Vilamoura EPT event – making it the largest poker tournament to ever take place in the country of Portugal. The 5,300 Euro buy in made up the more than 1.8 million Euro prize pool – of which Lewis took home more than 460,000 Euros. Other records weren’t safe at the EPT Vilamoura, either. The professional poker player from PokerStars, Luca Pagano broke the record for most EPT cashes at Vilamoura with his 16th – finishing in 52nd place.
The finishers from the final table at Vilamoura were as follows:
- 8th Place: Coutinho, Sergio
- 7th Place: Hollink, Rob
- 6th Place: Jensen, Frederick
- 5th Place: Sheringham, Teddy
- 4th Place: Trickett, Sam
- 3rd Place: Lee, Jason
- 2nd Place: Jacobson, Martin
- 1st Place, Lewis, Toby
The next event in the European Poker Tour will take place in London and will be the first of the major EPT events in season 7. This event will take place from September 29th to October 4th (main event).
